What exactly is 'non-veg'?

A few days back, I was talking to my room mate in US.
He asked me, "You dont eat chicken?"
I said "No".
"How are you surviving in this country, man?", he was surprised.
He felt pity for me, an almost extinct species relying on vegetables, and he was proud of his 'chicken-eating' abilities.
I asked him, "Do you eat beef and pork?"
"No way", was his strong reply. I could clearly see his respect for the sacred cow and the aversion towards the ugly pig. I could not help but smile, as I remembered the comments of one of my colleagues, "Its very difficult to survive in this country without eating beef and pork".

I dont say that vegetarianism is great, just because I dont eat meat. But, all I wish is that people should respect others' preferences, even when others are different from them.

Just got a funny thought on this. The word "non-veg" does not give the proper picture of what people eat. So, how about having different words like - chickenetarian, meatetarian, beefetarian, porketarian etc. Well, should cannibals be called humanitarians? ;)

You could call them humanitarians, but then they would not expect them to show humanitarian values as they fleece you ;-)

Well, adding a bit of poignancy to the discussion, I think the idea of vegetarianism is about causing of 'pain' as 'visible' to us and we understand it.we dont want to make our stomachs the smashaanas for co-beings slaughering them in cold blood, do we?

Hmmm..I was reading this book..wherein the writer says that ..one is a veggie becoz you do not relish the thought of biting your teeth into a corpse...
but i think the whole things is a matter of preference.
Plants are also living beings ...and atleast animals can run away...plants cant even do that:)
But I really do wish that people stop forcing me to try/explore/be adventurous by eating chicken!!!

Abuses & Animal Names

I have always been fascinated by curse words or abusive words. Though I am quite familiar with abusive words in other languages, I will give more examples from Kannada, as those were part of my growing up. Let me start by analyzing how cursing works. The main intention of abuse is to insult and also hurt the other person. Thats the key. If you have a set of vocabulary that your recipient does not understand or does not consider derogatory, sorry sir, its a waste! Kids begin their cursing using simple words like "stupid" , "idiot" , "fool" etc. And it does not take too much time for them to realize that these qualities are so common and acceptable, they cease to be curse words in the long run. And as kids, our abuses were mainly restricted to the animal names. A typical kid fight when we were young would go like this: Kid 1: "Kaththe" (Donkey, not ass ;) ) Kid 2: "Kothi" (Monkey) Kid 1: "Naayi" (Dog) Kid 2: "Goobe...

Bells They Are A Ringin'

Pauline Thomason once said "Love is blind, but marriage is an eye-opener". But, even the pre-marriage phase also can open your eyes to so many things. And if you are as general-knowledge-deficient as me, every moment is a new discovery. If you have a sense of humor, each discovery can be complete fun. *** Just before the saree shopping, mom asked about my fiancee - " AvLu work sarees wear maadthaLa? " I understood it as "work 'ge' sarees" and told - "No mom, she generally wears jeans or salwars to work" Mom was least surprised by the all too familiar stupidity of her son and said - "Work sarees do not mean the sarees which you wear to work. It means sarees that involve lot of handiwork like embroidery, mirror work etc." *** Shopping for sarees will introduce you to so many new things - crape silk, tusser silk, raw silk, butta, mango border, peacock border, temple border...
